Can I just talk about Fox for a second? Because his chapters were absolutely amazing and funny and heartbreaking and just so perfect. But don’t get me wrong- Cerys’ were all of those as well. Listen, I love these idiots. Fox and Cerys are our two main protagonists and I would die for them. I might have known what was going to happen (or in some cases, what already happened), but I loved waiting for the characters to figure it out, and to see how it happened. I will admit, most of the major twists were a little predictable, but that made it almost more fun for me. Whenever I was forced to put the book down, all I wanted to do was pick it back up and be immersed in this world and find out what happens next. This book always has something happening. There’s never a dull moment as our characters go on their journey (except, perhaps, right in the beginning before the journey even begins and we’re still learning about the world). Out of a concern for her soul and her reputation, her superiors insisted that she account for every voice and vision, as well as the sins that might have engendered them, thus giving us the account of her life that is now considered a literary masterpiece. And she exhibited a very personal brand of spirituality, often experiencing raptures of an unorthodox, arguably erotic, nature that left her frozen in one position for hours, unable to speak. Cathleen Medwick shows us a powerful daughter of the Church and her times who was a very human mass of a practical and no-nonsense manager, and yet a flamboyant and intrepid presence who bent the rules of monastic life to accomplish her work-while managing to stay one step ahead of the Inquisition. A refreshingly modern reconsideration of Saint Teresa (1515-1582), one of the greatest mystics and reformers to emerge within the sixteenth-century Catholic Church, whose writings are a keystone of modern mystical thought.įrom the very beginning of her life in a convent, following the death of her mother and the marriage of her older sister, it was clear that Teresa's expansive nature, intensity, and energy would not be easily confined. And therefore it will be a great and entertaining story of American history, told in Vowell's inimitable voice and in her unconventional style. There will be history and Obama and America and opportunistic missionaries and warring whalers and kings and queens. She will explain how Hawaii is Manifest Destiny's plate lunch. She argues that it's "breathtaking in its beauty, sometimes hideously developed, overwhelmingly religious, impoverished (except for pockets of staggering wealth), crass and spiritual all at once." In Unfamiliar Fishes, she will explore the exceptional history of Hawaii with her personal reporting and trademark smart-aleckiness to find out the odd and emblematic history of Hawaii, and how it got to be that way. When Sugar meets wealthy businessman William Rackham ( Chris O’Dowd), he is intrigued by everything she brings to his dreary existence, but as their relationship grows deeper, it also becomes more dangerous.ĭuring this recent exclusive interview with Collider, screenwriter Lucinda Coxon talked about her journey in bringing The Crimson Petal and The White to life, fitting so much story into four hours, the changes that needed to be made in order to translate from page to screen, how much the music and production design add to the overall story, how writing this made her grateful that she wasn’t a woman in that time period, how fantastic she thought all of the performances were, and how nervous she was about the sex scenes. Set in Victorian London, the four-part drama The Crimson Petal and The White, adapted from the book by Michel Faber, is a tale of seduction, power and class conflict centered around a vibrant, intelligent and sexually adept prostitute, named Sugar ( Romola Garai).
